What is meant by KRA – Key Result Area?

Key Result Areas (KRA) refers to parameter/metric defined by an Organization for a role. In other words, it is the definition of the key expectation from a role defined by the Management. It differs from Job Description. Job Descriptions define what needs to be done by a particular role, whereas KRA refers to the outcome of the actions taken in a role. Eg. Processing Payroll would be the job for a HR.

Timely processing of payroll ensuring that it is accurately done without any complaints from the staff would be the key result area for the assigned job. Setting specific KRAs is very important since it defines the contribution of the role to the organizational overall goals. KRA setting is an exercise carried out at the strategic level by the Top Management.
